WMPH 91.7 FM RADIO

I was the general manager of WMPH 91.7 FM radio station (1993-2010) located at Mount Pleasant High School.

WMPH Demo (2010)

I created the Broadcast Learning Center of the Brandywine School District incorporating not only radio, but two television centers. We provided both mobile disc jockey and recording services to all schools of the district. I took my students on field trips to radio and television stations in the Philadelphia market including KYW-3 with legendary reporter Larry Kane, Q102 and WMMR. Local radio professionals such as Michael Waite (WJBR), Mike Rossi (WSTW), Allan Loudell (WILM) and Joe Puglise (Clear Channel Delaware) would come to speak to my students or lend advice. Joe, later became the market manager for all the Clear Channel New York stations including favorites Z100 and KTU, invited me to visit him at his Manhattan offices. Several of my students went on pursue careers in communications. One student became a DJ on Sirius Satellite Radio and a DJ for MTV’s spring break in Cancun.

With WMPH, I was able to live out all of my radio ambitions. I interviewed many people including Delaware’s Governor in our studios, the Harlem Globetrotters, Richard Simmons, the Ringmaster of Ringling Brothers Circus, the Blue Man Group and numerous musicians and politicians. While attending a presidential convention as the press, I have stories hanging out with Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather, Sam Donaldson, Brian Williams, John Seigenthaler Jr., Ed Bradley Jr., Tim Russert, George Stephanopoulos, Chris Matthews, Oliver North, Newt Gingrich, Jerry Falwell, Al Sharpton, Mo Rocca, Helen Thomas and others. I hosted the countdown to many New Years, produced specialty programming, recorded countless on-air messages, and established our station as a leader in creative programming.

My work with WMPH had been featured many times in newspapers and magazines.
I had been seen on multiple television programs and news broadcasts.
I wrote instructional materials, facilitated the program schedule and created required forms. I would assist in writing curriculum for the Delaware Department of Education.
Being involved with every class, I contributed to each annual high school yearbook.
WMPH was phase one for my proposal creating the Broadcast Learning Center of the Brandywine School District.

Construction and Logistics

I was actively involved with several building projects.

Pictured in Studio A - I was still a senior in college when I built the initial studios here in 1993.
The entire school building was shut down for complete renovations during the 1995-1996 school year. I moved the radio station studios a few miles away to the temporary school site in this trailer.
I built the new studios, news room, production room and office within this trailer. I collaborated with the telephone company to send the signal through high fidelity equalized lines back to the transmitter site.
I rebuilt all the studios myself. Notice the colored ceiling lights? Red was On-Air, Yellow flashed when telephone would ring, and Green was the doorbell. I had fun wiring and creating many innovations.

I built the initial studios in 1993 with some assistance.  When the studios had to move to a temporary location in 1995, I built that facility myself.  In 1996, I had to rebuild the studios AGAIN when the school moved from the temporary site back to the primary school location.

Not affiliated with my school district, years later I would assist WMHS 88.1 FM at Thomas McKean High School build their studios and automation system.

In 2003, I worked with contractors once again for building window rennovation (this was not done during the 1995-1996 rennovation).
I designed the new studios with an architect in 1995, but continued to improve the operation as technology advanced.
In 2009, I planned the WMPH 40th anniversary celebration with the original founders of 1969.
I did extensive marketing, advertising and promotions for WMPH. I acquired many sponsors and negotiated numerous trades.
In addition to merchandise, I promoted in the yellow pages, cable TV channels, billboards, newspapers, magazines and community events.

FUN FACT

The General Electric desktop radio (pictured above, left) was by my beside since a young boy. The world came to me through this radio. For many years, I was most passionate about radio broadcasting. I would practice refining my voice. I sincerely dreamt to one day work in radio... and I did.

As co-founder of the Mount Pleasant Hall of Fame, I was pleased to induct the WMPH founders in 2009.
Although I departed WMPH in 2010, I was asked to return to DJ and EMCEE the next Mount Pleasant Hall of Fame in 2011 (pictured with Delaware Lt. Governor Matt Denn).
And I again returned to DJ and host the 2014 Mount Pleasant Hall of Fame gala and induction ceremony.
LEGACY - I left my position in 2010, but years later my nephew (pictured right in 2023) would be a student on WMPH.
